These Cocks Got Game

At 7:00 AM yesterday my Facebook feed was already overflowing with Gamecock –

With a – Go Gamecocks!…. – here

And a Get up! Get Up! Get Up! It’s Game Day… – There!

Here a – Game!….. There a – Cocks!

Everywhere a – Cock-a-Doodle-Do!

#TBT photos of football seasons of yore…Garnet and black clad children…and even a few proclamations that yesterday (this last Thursday of August that is hotter than Hades across the state of South Carolina) is better than Christmas.

Sentiments changed when people’s gleeful cheers and chants turned dark during the first quarter and then intensified as the game went on.  Using language that I don’t think Santa would approve of (you’re now on the naughty list).  The Gamecocks did not pull out a win…and sure that’s disappointing for a fan but yeesh, it’s a game.  (Lisa reminded me a few years ago that these are kids…in their teens and early 20s…not pros…most won’t even go pro…and we put a heavy weight on their shoulders. It’s a game…a school football game. So while I enjoy the game, I now have some different perspective.) EVERY Gamecock fan is waiting for that National Championship to come (interested to see how that all shakes out with the new system) and that perfect season including this one.  South Carolina has a strong BIG love for college football (Most people are either Gamecocks or Tigers, Pick one – You are NOT allowed to like both…I think it’s a law).  There is no pro team in the state.  College football is what you do on Saturdays in the Fall.  It’s really the only football I have watched or gotten excited about.

Lisa, on the other hand, loves pro football.  She watches the pre-game shows, the games, knows players and some stats.  She blissfully spends Sundays watching games (which makes me feel guilty for taking away the set-top boxes, do you want one back for football?). I, of course, complain and moan on Monday nights during football season…even though truthfully I monopolize 90% of the television watching (I know, we’ll try rabbit ears, I’ll get some!). I understand the game thanks to Saturdays spent in a pleasant buzz watching from the student section in my Saturday best (because you dress up for football in the South like you’re headed to a garden party). I’m happy to say I’ve grown – I am now a Redskins fan and which ever team a Manning is on.

Lisa and I…We’re like the yin and yang of football (and most things).

Our child will be born a Gamecock.  We’ll have to deal with the challenges that come with choosing another team as a family. (Ha ha!)Seriously though, if this kid gets a chess scholarship to any school…I’ll wear any color even orange and I look horrible in orange.  I’ll cheer for any animal (Beaver, heh heh, Beaver) or soldier type mascot (Trojan Man!)…I will just be one proud mom(my).

All this talk about football reminds me that fall is just around the corner.  It is my favorite time of year…that feeling in the air…I find it intoxicating.  Our fall is generally busy with vegan festivals and assorted fall activities…I can easily get lost in thought picturing the three of us drinking apple cider and carving pumpkins…But I’ll savor this particular fall…the autumn of us two!

      • Lmao!!! Callie is about to confiscate the remote and hide it, and that results in a problem because A) The Broncos are winning and I can’t turn the volume up B) I can’t rewind live TV to see a play again and C) I actually have to get up outta bed to turn it off! She’s pretty pissed but me, yeah, heaven! Giants tomorrow night! She’s really gonna spaz cuz I invited friends over ! Whoops!
